I very rarely come to the defense of the Staten Island Advance, especially there editorial page, but with respect to Official time postings vs. Chip times in road racing events I must come to their defense. The U.S.A.T.F. rules state that your gross time is your Official Time in any Track or Road racing event. The sports-writers of the Advance are simply following this guideline. The NYRRC goes by the same rule when it scores age groups and teams in their events and the Staten Island Half Marathon is scored with respect to these rules.
Whenever I get upset with my official time, I try to train a little harder and maybe match my chip time in the next race.
