Stephen, you are right about the 20 minutes for the Manhattan 1/2, but the mats are left open for 10 minutes for every race. If you cannot get to your pace/minute mile at the start, I agree with you that chip time becomes so much more important. As far as making your way past slower runers/walkers by the time you catch up to where you should be the crowd has usually thinned out. The chip has just made race life less stressful because you know that when you look up your time on the race web site it usually is exactly what your watch recorded. And by that I mean, YOUR actual time, which as I stated earlier, for the majority of runners in the mid-pack is just fine.
