As most of the running community is aware, professional runner Ryan Shay collapsed and died during the Olympic Trials Marathon. In browsing past results, I noticed the winner of the 2001 Pepper Martin Run on Staten Island was won by Ryan Shay in a time of 24:54. Given this quick time and the resemblence between the Pepper Martin race photos and his other running pictures, I believe this may have been the same guy. If so, Staten Island was honored to host this fine competitor and athlete, that many have been saying great things about.
