Rich Orazem methodically broke away from John Wowk to win the annual SIAC Sober-Up run in 18:25 over an icy 3-mile course at Clove Lakes Park on Monday. Grace DePompo, Orazem's sister-in-law, kept the women's title in the family, outdistancing the field by over two minutes with a wining time of 23:18. Rita Dougherty, second in 25:24, was never a threat to DePompo who is making a strong comeback after a one-year hiatus from the local running scene due to an unfortunate injury.

Orazem looked to be in control as he held a 13 second lead over Wowk at the halfway point. Wowk, who won the snow covered fun run last Saturday over this same course, gave chase but could not catch the younger Orazem settling for second place in a time of 18:53. Both times were excellent given the extra challenge imposed by the plowed, yet icy course, and easily outclassed the rest of the 40-runner field. A-Born Etchison (20:30) held off Mark Vogt (20:56) for third place honors, with Joe Busso (21:13) closing out the top five. Well known Ed Manganel, a teacher at Monsignor Farrell HS, posted a solid top 10 finish, taking sixth place in 21:53.

The race would not have been possible had the Parks Department not plowed the entire 3 mile course, and this snow removal effort after Saturday's major storm was greatly appreciated by the runners. The male and female winners each won a bottle of champagne to signify the first day of the third millennium, which despite popular opinion, was not last year.
