Tues., May 30 - Mike Racioppo,71 years old died on Memorial Day of a heart attack. Mike was a veteran of 43 marathons and was a great guy. Mike was best known for making strange noises while running and for being in Clove Lake Park at 10 A.M. running with Bill Welsh and the "Older" guys. Mike had a great sense of humor and only spoke good of people. He is an inspiration to the rest of us. He is being waked Tues. May 30th. at Harmon's on Forest Ave. from 7-9P.M.His mass will be at Sacred Heart Church on Wed. at 11 A.M. He will be missed!
Tues., May 30 - Long time Staten Island runner Michael Racioppo passed away Monday morning, May 29. Mike, who was recovering from recent bypass surgery, was seen at Clove Lakes park as recently as Saturday showing off his scars and talking about when he could start running again. The 71 year old runner was a regular at Island races and received age group awards in the 70 and over category at most of the 1999 races. Some of Mike's recent races included the 2000 Staten Island Half Marathon (2:06), The Lou Marli Run (second in the 70 and over age group), Muche-Struck Run 2.5 mile run (28:24), The Ninth Annual Wagner College Gunn Run 5k, (26.01- third 70 and over) and The Second Annual Rosebank Run for the Roses - 3 miles (27:43 - second 70 and over).
