Youth and experience once again prevailed at the annual SIAC sponsored "Sober up" 3 mile Fun Run. Mike Cassidy and Barbara Byrne were easy winners in this years first S.I. race as all the runners celebrated a "California style" New Year under sunny skies and temperatures just under 60 degrees.
Cassidy, the 19 year old Ivy League sophmore track star from the University of Pennsylvania easily won the men's race in 15:16. Andrew Blaich of Villanova clocked in at 16:15 with Shawn Williams following in 16:28. Both Cassidy and Blaich claimed that the Fun run was just one part of a bigger workout the two were doing that day.
The "Richmond Rockets" Babara Byrne once again won the Women's race in 20:25. The much improving Ellen Brenna-Hearn finished second in 22:02 with Terry Ballou not far behind in 22:19.
The balmy conditions brought out a large contingent of Island runners attempting to start the New Year the right way including Bob Guidera, the "Shirtless Wonder" who could not resist showing off his 51 year old physique to the abundant Clove Lakes Park field. The ubiquitous "Guidera" was actually the first 50 year old to cross the finish line in 22:02.
