3 Mile Fun Run

December 4, 2004

By Dave Panza

Scott LaMorte and Barbara Byrne posted victories at the weekly SIAC Run for Fun at Clove Lakes Park. LaMorte covered the three mile course in 16:35, outlasting second place Luis Oyola (17:31). Gene Galasso (18:55), Steve Woitkowski (19:59) and Rich Zichettello (21:33) rounded out the top five men.

Byrne won the women's race in 20:21, narrowly defeating Gail Marino (20:45). Mary Molski (23:30), Robin Ravit Gani (23:59) and Nancy Wickstrom (27:14) were third through fifth for the women.

Frisky dogs, a parade of ducks and underwear briefs were the order of the day at today's race. Marie Garone told of a neatly configured line of ducks parading quietly on the course. Clearly, Marie's running was not fleet enough to scare away the feathered friends.

Gail Marino told of a frisky dog (among several being walked) running in the race against the grain, disrupting her chase of Scott LaMorte. This same canine dove into the water near the finish line frantically paddling toward terrified ducks. We are happy to report that no animal was harmed in the making of this race. At last report, the dog is still swimming.

And finally, yours truly had an incident with his car keys. Upon casually placing them in my pocket, I was horrified when they slipped through a slight hole in the lining of my sweats, plummeting down the side of my leg. After several attempts to retrieve them the traditional way, I was forced to take them off to get the keys out, revealing a closely held secret that I wear briefs, not boxers. My apologies to Fred, Glenn, Gabe and the guy walking the Jack Russell, who were forced to witness this travesty. But I recovered before Scott LaMorte reached the first turn.

And speaking of Scott, he denies the rumor floating at the race that he was supplied steroids by BALCO, along with his close friends Barry Bonds, Gary Sheffield and Jason Giambi. An investigation is underway, but Scott has not yet been brought before a grand jury.

No Fun Run next week due to Special Olympics 2-mile Jingle Bell race at the Elizabeth Connelly Center, 10:30 a.m.
