SIAC
3 Mile Fun Run

August 3, 2002
by Dave Panza

Mohammed Lahseni and Danielle LaMagra recorded victories at the weekly SIAC Run for Fun at Clove Lakes Park. Lahseni covered the three-mile course in 16:37, narrowly turning back second place Mike Cassidy (16:38). Scott LaMorte finished third in 17:52, while Jeff Benjamin (19:00) and Vin Stasi (19:55) rounded out the top five.

LaMagra cruised to victory on the women's side in 20:27, with Gail Marino second in 21:23. Kim Chan (22:53), Brooke Anderson (23:38) and Fran Messina (23:50) placed third through fifth, respectively.

The weather was hot and humid for today's affair, the morning after a devastating one- hour storm last night, which dumped over an inch of rain on the Island. The course was thus muddy and dangerous in some spots, but the runners prevailed as always. Mohammed Lahseni of the North Shore Track club won a stirring stretch duel with Mike Cassidy by a stride.

Lahseni also showed his honesty and generosity before the race when he approached us with a $20 bill that he had found moments before on the ground. He wanted us to return the bill to its rightful owner, or use it for SIAC if we were unable to find the owner. We did not learn who dropped it, so Mohammed should know that the $20 will go toward refreshments for the next race. Thanks for your integrity and generosity, Mohammed.

We had quite an influx of runners from the Tottenville girls track team, all of whom ran well. Unfortunately, a few got lost on the course because of its winding turns, and did not finish. We'll make sure this doesn't happen again when the Tottenville team returns, as we want everyone to get their full workout in.

As of this writing, the softball game that followed the race at the adjoining ballfield is probably still happening. I invite a participant or spectator to share the story on the website for our amusement. Otherwise, I'll get the details and share next week.
