SIAC
3 Mile Fun Run

July 27, 2002
by Dave Panza

Anthony Mio and Winnie Ng were the winners at the weekly SIAC Run for Fun at Clove Lakes Park. The race was the third of four races in the Steve Lauria Memorial Series, with the final race to be held on August 24 at 9AM.

Mio won a close battle for first place overall, covering the three-mile course in 16:45. Mohammed Lahseni was a close second in 16:47, with Scott LaMorte a narrow third in 16:52. Ronald Torres (17:05) and Chris Greene (17:56) rounded out the top five.

Winnie Ng won the women's division in 18:31, holding off second place Kristin Farley (19:08). Danielle LaMagra (19:47), Alma Ramos (20:36) and Barbara North (21:17) placed third though fifth for the women.

We had a fine field of 76 finishers (and some others who didn't sign their time) on a cloudy, humid day. Steve Lauria would have been ecstatic at such a turnout for his beloved Fun Run race. Thank you all for coming, and don't forget the last race in the series on August 24, 9AM. Final series awards and breakfast will be handed out and enjoyed, respectively.

Debra Ellis and Mary Pannese of SI Special Olympics ran the race, and then led us in a rendition of the Special Olympics creed afterwards on the bullhorn. Scott LaMorte and Winnie Ng lead the Men's and Women's standings after three races; top 15 in both categories will win awards. Good job by Mark Vogt and Fred Rigolini in providing refreshments after the race, thanks guys. We'll have more eats for the final race.

How about a rousing ovation for Gail Marino, who finished sixth in today's race in 21:33. Gail is coming off a victory in the Joe Kleinerman 12-Hour Run in Bayside, Queens, where she logged an incredible 71 miles, 861 yards in 12 hours. And when I say victory, I don't mean women's division, but over everyone, male and female. The second place finisher, about a mile behind, was also female. Spencer Ellis and Mike Tobin also participated. We tip our hats to Gail, a great runner and class act!!
