SIAC
3 Mile Fun Run

June 1, 2002
by Dave Panza

Anthony Mio and Nancy Tom posted easy victories at the weekly SIAC Run for Fun at Clove Lakes Park. Mio covered the three-mile course in 17:09, easily holding off second place Luis Oyola (18:30). Steve Woitkowski (19:07), Greg Messana (19:54) and Scott Catone (20:14) rounded out the top five overall.

Tom won the women's division in 20:22, outlasting a trio who battled closely for second place - Alma Ramos (21:25), Danielle La-Magra (21:26) and Barbara Byrne (21:27). Annmarie Ruta was fifth in 22:15.

Hot weather greeted the runners today, and the heat contributed to the downfall of a new female runner, who passed out on the course. But heroes Mark Vogt (who was in second place at the time of the incident) and Tim McCauley helped the young woman regain her strength. This act of heroism and sportsmanship will be honored as a Top Ten Fun Run moment for 2002, you can be sure.

Mike Garone's brother Stephen was in from Boston to visit and run the race. Rumor has it that he flew in with the Red Sox, but the ballclub denies this rumor, stating there would have been no room on the flight for regular folk, even with disabled Manny Ramirez' seat presumably available. Steve nipped Mike by 19 seconds. Mike had Steve in sight, but is not fond of chasing people, even for family bragging rights.

Bobby Guidera broke 21:00 by a cool 5 seconds, but despite the controversy, is still calling for chip times to rule. Lisa Rigolini seconds the motion, so I have ringing in both ears now.

Fun Run Chamionship next Saturday at 10AM at Clove Lakes Park, first in a series of four races in honor of Steve Lauria. Barbecue, awards and javelin throw to follow race. Please try to make it.
