SIAC
3 Mile Fun Run

May 4, 2002
by Dave Panza

Scott La Morte and Winnie Ng cruised to easy victories in the weekly SIAC Run for Fun at Clove Lakes Park. La Morte toured the three mile course in 16:55, easily outdistancing second place Alberto Garcia (18:02). Frank Connelly (18:08), Daniel Bisceglie (18:22) and Tim McCauley (18:24) rounded out the top five.

Ng won the women's race in 18:26, with Alma Ramos a distant second in 21:07. Meaghie Campacci (22:23), Annmarie Ruta (22:39) and Donna Johnson (23:42) finished third through fifth, respectively.

Cool weather greeted the runners today, and fast times were the order of the day, despite ongoing construction that affected parts of the course. Scott La Morte broke his magic 17:00 barrier, and has higher hopes for the rest of the season. Winnie Ng handily won the women's race, while in hot pursuit of the top men. She placed sixth overall.

Lisa Rigolini narrowly missed breaking 27:00, but we take our timing very seriously and inspected her finish very carefully. As always, the clock is one of the purest truths there is. Alma Ramos was so excited at witnessing the Boston Marathon this year and cheering SI runners on, that she is hoping to run it in 2003. Her qualifying race will be in Richmond, VA in November, and she needs to break 3:50. You see, another runner inspired by my Marathon website article!! Will there be more?

And finally, remember my crack about never putting Andy Burek and Alma Ramos on the same relay team when they almost dropped the bullhorn one week while passing it to each other? Well it comes back to bite me, as I dropped the baton from Mark Vogt in today's alumni relay at St. Joseph by the Sea. It did not cost us, as we and Anthony Pitarresi and his brother finished a distant, but solid second. The gaffe was momentary, as I used my old softball instincts to scoop it up quickly. But boy, the clank of that metal baton on the track was loud enough to elicit a groan from all corners of the stadium. May my legend live on. I want another crack at a relay!
