SIAC
3 Mile Fun Run

March 2, 2002

Jeff Benjamin and Winnie Ng posted victories at the weekly SIAC Run for Fun at Clove Lakes Park. Benjamin covered the three-mile course in 17:29, outlasting second-place Scott LaMorte (17:38). Luis Oyola (18:05), Daniel Bisceglie (18:55) and David Panza (19:18) rounded out the top five men.

Winnie Ng won the women's division in 18:56, placing fifth overall. Patricia O'Brien was second in 22:09, while Janice Ellison (22:13), Alma Ramos (23:30) and Catherine Morrison-Buck (24:08) captured third through fifth, respectively.

Jeff Benjamin won a narrow battle from a rejuvenated Scott LaMorte, and informed us afterward that he has won at least one SIAC Fun Run every year since 1981. His record is now intact for 2002 with today's victory, a well-earned one over LaMorte and Luis Oyola. Scott is on the comeback trail, boldly predicting a sub 18:00 finish today after last week's winning 18:35. And he was a man of his word, but modestly gave Jeff Benjamin credit for pushing him to a 17:38. Luis is still recovering from a leg injury, but ran well.

Former Olympian Winnie Ng made a rare appearance today, cruising to victory on the ladies' side. After whipping past me in the last 3/4 mile, she set her sights on fourth place Daniel Bisceglie, who probably didn't realize she was coming. It's a good thing he didn't turn around once (as I have been known to do), or she might have caught him. As it is, she was a second behind. Great efforts by both!!

Congratulations to Erinn (yes, there are 2 n's, if I read the sheet right) Walsh, who finished her first full Fun Run in 29:13, with Nancy Wickstrom.

OK, I try not to write about Alma Ramos every week, but she keeps giving me good material. I could have avoided mentioning that she told Mark Vogt after the race, "My God, your red is so face!", but I can't ignore her latest trouble with the bullhorn. She didn't drop it this time, as almost occurred last week, but after the race managed to activate its siren. Valuable seconds went by with Alma struggling to deactivate it while laughing hysterically. Mark finally raced over to help, but only after squad cars from four different precincts appeared at the park to answer the call.
