SIAC
3 Mile Fun Run

February 9, 2002

Douglas Auer and Barbara Byrne coasted to easy victories in the weekly SIAC Fun for Fun at Clove Lakes Park. Auer of Team High Rock led a brigade of high school track stars by covering the three-mile course in 16:15, while Edwin Davila of Port Richmond High School finished second in 17:12. Chris Strumolo (17:26), Robert Breen (17:30) and masters star Luis Oyola (17:34) rounded out the top five.

Byrne led the women in 19:59, with Patricia O'Brien second in 22:10. Alma Ramos (23:03), Fran Messina (23:49) and Charlene Guarano (26:25) rounded out the top five women.

The weather was marvelous for early February, and fast times reflected everyone's exuberance. Douglas Auer posted one of the best times in recent years at the Fun Run in easily outdistancing an excellent Edwin Davila. Davila stated in post-race comments that he hoped to do better and can do better, but he was very impressive nonetheless in my view. Barbara Byrne won the women's race while beating the 20:00 mark by less than a second. She wanted to write in 20:00, but I was right on top of the action as official timekeeper and know she just got under.

Brian O'Hagen was in town from Tennessee. We thought he had moved to North Carolina but learned otherwise. Brian still follows our website religiously, so he gets a special mention here. Welcome back!! Brian tells us that running in Tennessee is far more difficult than here. Not as many parks but instead many fast drivers zooming about. Plus, many dog owners have their dogs off leashes, and the dogs are not used to seeing runners, so they act quite startled, apparently. Brian clocked in at 19:13 for old times sake.

Alma Ramos and Lisa Rigolini reported a heavy use of cologne by the male runners at today's race. Apparently the attempted mating scent backfired, so the guys must go back to the drawing board, we think. We'll keep you posted on future improvements in this area.

And speaking of Lisa, she finally won her personal, friendly rivalry with Mike Garone. Mike ran his usual consistent race, but Lisa nearly ran a personal best in breaking 27:00. Congrats, Lisa, master baker extraordinaire. Her chocolate chip cookies were gone by the time I made it over, so I had a few plain but tasty cookies instead.

The race truly had the flavor of a high school meet with runners from Farrell, New Dorp, Moore and Port Richmond. Overall, we had a fine turnout of 66 runners for a February race.
