SIAC
3 Mile Fun Run

January 5, 2002

Dean Grusky broke open a close race at the halfway point to win the weekly SIAC Run for Fun at Clove Lakes Park, while Grace DePompo won the women's division. Grusky toured the three mile course in 17:16, outlasting second place Luis Oyola (17:39). Richie Orazem (18:14), Frank Connelly (18:17) and Mark Vogt (18:24) captured third through fifth place.

DePompo finished in 20:20, narrowly defeating Gail Marino (20:33) and Barbara Byrne (20:35). Alma Ramos (22:53) and Marissa Pontecorvo (23:55) placed fourth and fifth, respectively.

Both the men's and women's races were hotly contested today, with Dean Grusky holding off a serious challenge from Luis Oyola before pulling away late in the men's division. Grace DePompo, Gail Marino and Barbara Byrne waged serious battle, with Grace finally pulling away and Gail nipping Barbara by a few strides. Grace was modest as usual, as we had to hunt her down in the parking lot to sign the pad and claim her victory.

The start of the race was delayed several minutes while we waited for a frantic Scott LaMorte to run up to the start and quickly change into running attire. He was apologetic, but no apology needed, Scott. Your many years of fine races at Clove Lakes Park earn you a break in this case.

Bobby Guidera proclaims himself to be rounding into shape, and it has to help that Bobby wears the least amount of clothing of all the frigid runners, enabling him to fly over the course. Anthony Pitarresi is coming back from injury, and announced he was shooting for last place until he can shoot for first place again. Nice try, Anthony. You finished 18th out of 48. Mark Vogt appreciated being paced by Richie Orazem most of the race, but is having second thoughts since Richie asked him after the race, "What happened to you the last half mile?" Richie left Mark to chase Frank Connelly, then had to work a bit at the end to hold off a fiercely determined Frank.
