Remember, also, that Lance started out, so many years ago, as a triathlete before switching full-time to biking; it's not as if he is a stranger to running or the marathon distance. He won the Iron Kids Tri at age 13, and also the Dirty Duathalon, which he seemingly entered just for fun. He does know what it feels like to move on two legs.
There's also been some talk of him attempting the Ironman in Hawaii in the near future.
