From The Name Game in the Staten Island Advance:

RACE MILESTONES

Saturday will be a special day for racing on Staten Island for more than one reason.

The cross country season will open at Clove Lakes with the Wagner College Invitational, which features college and high school races. Prior to that, the 30th edition of the Celic Run will be conducted at Clove Lakes.

The Celic Run, which has adjusted over the years from a 10K to its present four-mile length, is run in memory of brothers Marty and Tom Celic. Marty, a firefighter, was killed in an arson fire in 1976. Tom perished in the Sept. 11 attacks.

It is also the final race to decide the winner of the James Halverson Award, with the Scott's Race and Al Ronaldson Run being the first two legs toward the firefighters' cumulative title.

Last year's winning time was a crisp 21 minutes, 30.4 seconds and proceeds of each year's race are used to support the Martin and Thomas Celic Scholarship Fund at Monsignor Farrell HS, where Tom and Marty both ran.

The Cargo Cafe will host its annual pre-race bash Thursday, from 6-10 p.m. Early registration price is $16, with a race-day price of $20.

There is a two-mile health walk Saturday before the four-mile main event and a kids' run of a to-be-determined length is scheduled for 11 a.m.
