RAA DAY # 68 WEDNESDAY 8/18/04

As we leave Lancaster, Pennsylvania & head to Kutztown for 49.3 miles with a cutoff of 14 hrs 5 mins, it is slightly cool & muggy, with rain written in the sky. But it turns into a hazy morning, with the sun desperately trying to make an appearance. Lou starts out in the back with Taka, as we make our way through the city. Will Campbell not only invited us all over to dinner last night, but arranged for a large group of his friends, along with himself, to greet all the runners at the 3.3 mile mark with donuts & drinks. His kindness will always be remembered.
After 8 miles out, Lou & Kaz are just journeying along, taking in the sights. But we later learn, ahead at 24 miles, there is quite a bit of construction going on. The course now has changes in order to avoid the construction. It takes us along a more residential route but lined with more hills & of course mailboxes. Alan told me to follow the detour signs for Old Lancaster Pike. I thought that’s what I did. But after about 10 miles, I knew I was in the wrong place. I then backtracked & took another route. This time it was right, I saw Kaz & Satoko & a mile ahead of them was Lou. I think he knew I was lost, but I told him I was stuck in traffic. We both laughed because we both knew I was lost. He said, " but you found your way".  Because of the detour, the runners actually put in an extra mile.
Everyone finished within cutoff. Till tomorrow.
Lou & Agnes
