Jeff Benjamin, Coach of the New Dorp H. S. track team breezed through the
5km Kurt Steiner Summer Run to capture 1st place in 16:58. William Pedrazo
finished 2nd in 17:12. The twosome broke from the field at the start. It
quickly became a two man race. Benjamin broke away to win for only the
second time since 1986. Amy Klosterman ran unchallenged to win the womens division in 19:36.
Stephen DiPietro, 6 years old, running in his first Summer Run finished
in 33:10 The series held in memory of Kurt Steiner will continue on alternate
Wednesday evening at 7PM though August. Registration opens at 6PM and a
warmup course tour is held at 6:15. The next race will be June 28, 2000
Free for students, under 18 and seniors over 66. Water and fruit are free to all entrants. Awards are resented in 5 year
age increments from 20 years and over with youth awards for those 10 &
under, 11-12, 13-14, 15-19. All children under 10 receive an award. The
best times of the 2000 season and the course records in each age category
will be printed on the 2001 applications. The final race of the season on Wednesday August 23, will be the
Championship of the series. A pizza and libations party will be held after
the race. This will be the last chance to set either a personal best or
course record. The series is produced by New York Road Runners Club in memory of Kurt
Steiner. Similar races are also conduct in Prospect Park on the opposite
Wednesday evenings. Kurt Steiner started\producing these summer races over 40 years ago. He
was truly BTB ( Before The Bridge). His love of this sport was second only
to his love of childrens. Kurt was a man for all seasons.He traveled by
public transportation from his home in Brooklyn. Armed with a Harpo Marx
like bag of tricks he was running when running wasn't cool.
