3 Mile Fun Run

Paul Byrne and Kari Proffitt posted victories in the weekly SIAC Run for Fun at chilly Clove Lakes Park. The race was run in honor of Steve Lauria, a Run for Fun coordinator who died in the September 11 tragedy, and a large turnout of 59 runners participated. Byrne covered the three-mile course in 17:02 to best Anthony Canova (17:08) and Luis Oyola (17:52). Chris Strumolo (18:15) and Spencer Ellis (18:22) placed fourth and fifth respectively.
Proffitt won the women's division in 19:36, with Barbara Byrne (20:12) narrowly defeating Gail Marino (20:19) for second place. Mia Caviezel (22:24) and Sara Gardner (25:45) were fourth and fifth.
The theme of today's race was the search for the wild dogs. Police were present in abundance to hunt for dogs suspected in recent zoo maulings, particularly also in light of numerous recent attacks by dogs on joggers in other boroughs. Our runners were nervous on the course today, with one suspicious dog sighted. Mark Vogt carried a small bat for protection during his warmup run, but wisely ditched the bat in order to hold off a charging Gene Galasso for sixth place.
Paul Byrne held off Anthony Canova in a stirring battle for first place overall after trailing at the first turn, while Kari Proffitt, Barbara Byrne and Gail Marino kept the same order of places as last week in nearly the exact times.
There are always stories to be told just by reading the results pad. Rich Re notes that he finished one-tenth of a second ahead of Alma Ramos, after escorting her the whole way. Bill Welsh circled his age of 72 on the pad, and proclaimed afterward that he wants to continue to run with his new partner Marie Garone. She gladly accepted the offer in order to have someone help her fend off any wild dogs. Mario Rizzo needs to explain why he signed in "Mario Ripper".
Thanks to all who showed up today to honor Steve Lauria in a moment of silence after the race. Mark Vogt paid tribute to Steve with a brief speech, and brought a pair of Steve's running shoes. Steve is missed very much by so many people, and his spirit lives on in the Fun Run that was so dear to his heart.
