Staten Island Athletic Club's
3 Mile Fun Run

December 22, 2001

Anthony Canova and Kari Proffitt captured victories in the men's and women's divisions of the SIAC Run For Fun under cold, clear conditions at Clove Lakes Park. Canova toured the three-mile course in 17:07, with Anthony Mio a close second in 17:15. Luis Oyola (18:18), Scott LaMorte (18:52) and David Panza (18:54) rounded out the top five men.

Proffitt won the women's race in 19:36, while Barbara Byrne (20:19) edged out Gail Marino (20:31) for second place. Tonya Obey (23:33) and Maggie Mastrandrea (24:29) rounded out the top five women.

Today's race belonged to a pair of Anthony's, as Anthony Canova of Team High Rock outdueled Anthony Mio of Susan Wagner High School by eight seconds. We learned from Mio's coach Dianna Galgano that Anthony suffered a minor head injury yesterday, but she still expected him to run today. So it's safe to say he would have received the same head injury from her hands had he not run today.

Special mention to Dom DelPrete for a personal best of 21:52, but we must add that Richie Orazem nosed Dom out by one-tenth of a second, since Richie signed in at 21:51.9.

Lisa Rigolini reports heavy geese (or are they ducks?) sightings on the course. The birds are spooking the less experienced runners out there, but Lisa shrugs them off.

I saved the best for last. The Obeys, Arnold and Cheryl, brought a whole contingent including their own daughters and family members from Cheryl's side. The group of over a dozen wore reunion t-shirts for the occasion, and all ran well. Special kudos to Arnold, who ran his own race and went back on the course several times to bring home the others. So it is unclear how many miles Arnold ran in total, but it may have been two races!!

Next week's race is the one year anniversary of the blizzard race, and in honor of Steve Lauria who timed that race two days after heart surgery, we're trekking to the lake after the race is over to have a moment of silence where his mom spread his ashes. Feel free to join us.
