Luis Oyola easily captured the 3-mile SIAC Run for Fun at windy Clove Lakes Park in a time of 18:02. Frank Connelly was a distant second in 18:47, while Steve Woitkowski (19:08), Scott LaMorte (19:11) and Gene Galasso (19:12) rounded out the top five in a stirring battle for third place. Gail Marino coasted to victory on the women's side in 20:56.
There was little drama on this day, as the runners battled high winds, particularly around Martling. Luis Oyola sprinted to an early lead and coasted to victory, with Frank Connelly running alone for second place. The battle for third place was more interesting, with Steve Woitkowski finally pulling away from a pack of four. Mark Vogt and Gene Galasso inspired a tired Scott La Morte to push on, then tested his sprinting capabilities by dashing almost onto his shoulder in the final 10 yards.
Only four women competed among the 34 human entrants, with the one canine
entrant being led by one of those four women (Ruth Fairbrother). We knew
the wind would be a factor when Gail Marino's young son Gabe was nearly blown
away by a gust of wind before the race. But he seemed to enjoy the wind more
than the runners did.
