3 Mile Fun Run

Rich Orazem broke open a close race at the halfway point and cruised to victory in the SIAC 3-mile Run for Fun at Clove Lakes Park in a time of 17:02. Luis Oyola and Scott LaMorte stayed with Orazem throughout the first loop, with Oyola settling for second in 18:03. Frank Connelly (18:28), LaMorte (18:49) and David Panza (18:57) rounded out the top five.
Barbara Byrne captured the women's race easily in 19:52, while 14-year old Marissa Pontecorvo finished second in 22:45. Lisa Rigolini (27:08), Ruth Fairbrother (27:52) and Marie Garone (39:05) rounded out the top five women.
The race was contested under more seasonal temperatures than we've seen lately, and the theme of today's race seems to have been "passion". 14-year old Marissa Pontecorvo ran a fine 22:45 with her dad, and cried out loud just after the race from the intense effort, either tears of joy or pain, we're not sure. David Panza stubbornly insisted on breaking 19:00 again, bloodying his hand on a bridge wall for the second straight week in an effort to tighten that turn.
Lisa Rigolini continued her hot pursuit of Mike Garone (in a running sense, of course), narrowly dropping a 7-second decision. MIke seemed surprised at the closeness of the verdict, and insisted that he did not hear Lisa closing. I guess if and when Lisa does pass Mike, she will have to tap him on the shoulder to get his attention.
Finally, two female runners, neither of whom ran in this race, were seen arguing vehemently in the parking lot after the race. All other conversations were put on hold, as we wondered whether fisticuffs or hair pulling would ensue. But cooler heads prevailed, and we left with Rodney King on our minds. "Can't we all just get along?"
Remember, next Sunday is the Special Olympics 2-mile Jingle Bell Run at 10:30 at the Connelly Center in Willowbrook.
