Luis Oyola broke open a close race to post yet another in a string of victories this fall at the SIAC Fun Run at Clove Lakes Park in 17:46. After battling Oyola for more than half the race, Ernie Beach settled for second in 18:08, with a fast closing Mark Vogt third in 18:09. Frank Connelly (18:30) and Steve Woitkowski (18:39) rounded out the top five.
Barbara Byrne led the women in 20:17, followed by Lisa Mangus (25:10) and Kathy Roppolo-O'Hara (25:55).
This race was not without its share of bizarre incidents, as Frank Connelly "cried fowl" (thanks to Ernie Beach for that pun) while stepping on the back of a duck. We believe the injured, if not plucky, bird is OK, as it was seen scooting off the course after impact. Also, a pair of loose dogs ran havoc over part of the course, forcing a speeding Marie Garone to come to a brief halt. This ruined any chance of Marie winning the race, or at least posting a personal best!
But everyone enjoyed the unusually balmy December weather, with several SIAC members playing some softball in the parking lot afterwards. After watching Mark Vogt and Lisa Rigolini field some grounders in a pepper game with Fred Rigolini, we decided that Lisa will be a strong candidate to take Scott Brosius' place at third base for the Yankees next year.
