Staten Island Athletic Club's
3 Mile Fun Run

August 25, 2001

I would like to thank George Kochman for taking the time to come down and cover the fun run. While this wasn't considered a "major" race, it received great attention from the runners as fifty seven ran, and the write-up in the Advance was the icing on the cake.

There were just a few points that didn't quite make it to press. Perhaps the Advance knows better, though maybe we have a more off beat idea of what is news worthy. Take for instance Anthony Pitarresi, who was fighting a fever and threw up on his way to the starting line, yet still ran a 17:01, just one second shy of his 2001 PR. Now that's guts. How about Tony Celentano, who notched his 2001 PR with a 24:37. That's a pretty good time for a masters runner, let alone someone who will soon turn seventy. A lot of credit also goes to Al Garcia for once again easily breaking the 17:00 barrier. Gail Marino and Alma Ramos staged a great duel, passing the halfway mark side by side, only to be take over in the stretch by Kristen Farley. It was also fun seeing Pitarresi, Edwin Davila, Tim McCauley and Scott Catone all run between 17:01 and 17:06. Each represented a different decade proving that a teenager, a twenty-something, a thirty-something and a forty-something can still have something in common. Jimmy Hart ran a 22:39. Last year he struggled to just finish the Thursday night runs, now he's picking up speed with every race.

Fran Messina, who was honored as the inductee into the fun run hall of fame, showed she can still compete with the open runners with her sixth place 23:21 performance. Fran who has had a stellar running career dating back to 1978, and won the SIAC woman runner of the decade for the 1990s, shows no signs of slowing down any time soon.

The race and the entire 25th Anniversary Fun Run Hall of Fame Series was a complete success. The attendance at the races was always over 50, with the third race attracting 75 runners. We will try to do something similar next summer, though we promise the food will arrive on time. I'm glad that all of the regulars were able to bring home some nice trophies and hope to get even bigger turnouts next year.
