Staten Island Athletic Club's
3 Mile Fun Run

August 4, 2001

Anthony Pitarresi broke out of his second-place syndrome to capture his first fun run win of the year in 17:38. Most of us would gladly take a second place finish, though some might say that the person who finishes second is merely the first looser. Pitarresi has been improving all year, so today’s win was no surprise. Ruth Fairbrother took the win over a small women’s field with a 28:41. That doesn’t mean all the women were short, there were just three runners.

A brief ceremony to see off Louis Rodrigues and Agnes Oquendo as the set out to run to Miami, preceded the fun run this week. Judging by the number of runners who accompanied them to the Outerbridge, many might have though it was the actual fun run and are still searching for the one-mile marker. We wish Louis and Agnes all the luck in the world.

Those who chose the slightly shorter 3-mile distance still had the challenge of completing the course on the most humid Saturday of the year. The sign-in sheet had eight blank times, and perhaps that many DNF’s due to the heat. That didn’t seem to initially phase Scott LaMorte and Anthony Pitarresi, who set a fast pace through a 5:30 first mile. LaMorte found the pace too hot, and became one of those DNFers, leaving Wagner High Schooler Anthony Mio to chase Pitarresi. A pack consisting of Dave Panza, Steve Lauria, Jeff Benjamin and a number of New Dorp HS runners drew straws to see who would give chase to the leaders. After a 5:57 first mile, it was Chris Strumolo who drew the short straw and made a move at the leaders. In the end, however, it was Pitarresi’s day as he took the win over Mio who ran 17:53 in second place. Pitarresi will be happy to take one more second place finish next week as the 25th Anniversary Fun Run Hall of Fame Series continues. He is currently in third place, but I expect him to move into a very honorble second place soon, especially if current second-placer Luis Oyola is still running to Miami by next week. If there are enough beer breaks, Oyola might just keep going. Back to the race, Strumolo closed fast, but settled for a close third in 17:56. Benjamin (18:15), Panza (18:22) and Lauria (18:44) outlasted the humidity and closed out the top six.

On the women’s side Ruth Fairbrother took the win in 28:41. Lisa Rigolini was second in 29:08 and Maria Miller was third in 36:06.

Don’t forget to show up for race #4 of the Hall of Fame series next week. Trophies will go to the top 25 men and women in the series, so if you’re still in contention, get in your 4 races. There are only 18 women left so everyone will get a trophy. Race #5 will be August 25 with the awards ceremony to follow, and promises to be a true 70’s blast.
