Mother Nature Prefers the Fun Run

Unlike the Ronaldson Race, this week’s tropical storm waited until the fun run was over to get into full force, proving that Mother Nature has a soft spot in her heart for our little Saturday morning rendezvous. Luis Oyola, who decided to run 5K today, recovered from a wrong turn (now how many times have we run this course Louie), to win the race in 17:41. Lisa Fagnani, who needed to be coaxed into running the race, ended up winning for the women in 24:15.

At the start, we explained that the mile markers weren’t out due to the rain, and joked that this shouldn’t cause anyone to get lost. Little did we know………. Oyola, as usual, bolted from the pack and held a solid lead going up the first hill. That’s when the last beer from last Thursday’s Twilight run kicked in and Louie hung a Louie, heading over the bridge toward Tommy Hart’s van and beer cooler. With the leader blazing a new trail, Scott LaMorte and A-Born Etchison assumed control, but “Honorable” Mark Vogt, got Oyola’s attention in time to get him back on course. Oyola returned the favor by passing Vogt at the halfway point. Coming up that same “wrong way” hill on the second loop, Oyola had amazingly caught LaMorte and Etchison, this time staying straight at the top and sprinting by the duo for the win.

Etchison (17:44) and LaMorte (17:57) both had great races and 2001 PRs in places two and three. Mark Vogt took fourth in (18:18) and was the first to donate to our fund which will buy Luis a GPS system for Christmas. In the taking it easy this week category, Dave Panza (18:41), Dave Down (19:12), Steve Lauria (19:18), Richie Chin (19:36) and Gene Galasso (19:49) took places five through nine.

Fagnani had a battle with Linda VanName, but, despite running only a few fun runs, stayed on the course and held off VanName (24:29) for the win. Lisa Rigolini (29:56) and Kathy O’Hara (30:37) took places three and four.

Don’t forget, the five race Fun Run Hall of Fame Series will continue on July 7 (the Saturday after Pepper Martin) with race number two. Trophies will be awarded to the top 25 men and women in the series (average of best 4 times). The current standings are represented by the June 9 Fun Run Championship order of finish, since it was the first race of the series. All contenders will remain on the scoreboard until they miss two series races. At that point they will be removed from the standings, banished from Clove Lakes Park and forced to live in New Jersey. So try to get in your four races, the pizza in Jersey stinks.
