3 Mile Fun Run
May 26, 2001
With the first leg of the Triple Crown awaiting on Monday, most of the fun run field took the high road by running easy. That, coupled with a rainy and raw morning, kept all but the most diehard runners away. Still, the race had its interesting moments as Fearless Scott LaMorte, who ran almost the entire race with his left shoelace untied, didnt let Mondays pending race slow him down, and ran an 18:49 for his first win of the year. Kari Proffit cruised in with a 19:00 run as part of longer workout, to take the womens race.
It was certainly a day for us old fools, as nobody under the age of thirty competed (or at least they didnt sign in). Given the bad weather, perhaps that proves you dont really grow wiser as you grow older. LaMorte trailed three rabbits early, but took control of the race before the mile mark and looked to be on his way to victory. However, the untied shoelace put his race in jeopardy. Mom always said, double-knot your shoelaces.. and dont play ball in the house. LaMorte, who won the year-long Millenium Challenge in 1999, managed to hang on despite slowing in the second half of the race, to take the victory just like old times. Moments later, Proffit nailed down the womens race and second place overall.
A close race for third place saw Scott Hall (19:42) edge Anthony Skomina (19:45) with Bob Plochinski (19:58) tagging along in fifth with his second straight sub-20:00 fun run. Tommy Mangus ran a steady 20:35 in sixth, just ahead of John Wowk who ran 20:40. Gene Galasso, who is starting to round back into shape after and injury, took eight in 21:35. Patrick Mooney ran 22:11 for ninth and sixty-five year old Alan Fairbrother earned a top-ten performance with a 22:24.
Lisa Mangus took second among the women with a 22:50 followed by Alans wife Ruth Fairbrother, third in 26:21. Lisa Rigolini (30:51) and Marie Garone (38:47) completed the top five.
There will be a Fun Run next Saturday. The SI YMCA "Worlds Largest Run" on June 2nd has been cancelled. The SI YMCA "Worlds Largest Run" on June 2nd has been moved from Clove Lakes Park to Flushing Meadows Park, so ignore any previous rumors about the fun run not being held and show up on Saturday for the regular fun run.
