Staten Island Athletic Club's
3 Mile Fun Run

April 28, 2001

It was another nice day for a fun run and 40+ runners took advantage of the pleasant conditions to post some good times and have some fun. It seems that each week a different top runner visits fun run for a quick victory. This week Ryan Maxwell, who proved to be THE top Island runner with last year’s Triple Crown victory, took the men’s race in 17:13. Kari Proffit, also THE top woman runner on the Island, made a cameo and easily won the women’s race in 18:40. I gotta fix that cap-lock key.

Nobody seemed intent on testing Maxwell, as Mark Vogt and Dave Panza led a pack of ten through the first half-mile. With Maxwell, Scott Catone and a slew of talented High Schoolers biding their time, it was not a question of “if”, but “when” the race would break open. That happened approaching Martling Avenue as Maxwell shifted gears, hurdled a goose (for real) and opened up a lead. I’m sure the ASPCA appreciated Maxwell’s move, but the rest of us had to deal with what was left behind after the startled goose crossed the road. Jonathan Perina gave chase (after some careful stepping) but settled for second place in a fine 17:21. At only 13 years old, Perina is in a good position to make some noise in high school; keep an eye on him. Catone was content to hang out in third place for the majority of the race finishing with a 17:54. New Dorp teammates Chris Strumolo (18:03) and Lassana Moore (18:12) ran most of the race shoulder-to-shoulder, before Strumolo pulled away in the final half-mile to take fourth place.

Oh yeah, and what about those masters runners who shared the early lead? Panza (18:22) regrouped in the final half-mile to run down Steve Lauria (18:23) for sixth place and Vogt claimed eighth place in 18:35. Another New Dorper, Dave Amarasena (18:42) continued his comeback from a knee injury in ninth and Scott LaMorte, after his first real week of training (well only 15 miles, but it’s a start) posted an 18:55 for tenth. Could he be serious this time? We will soon find out. Ken Pickell, who had been concentrating on some well run half-marathons, ripped off his first real speed run of the year with an 18:57 in 11th place.

On the women’s side, Kari Proffit, who has accumulated some awesome half-marathons lately and won the Queens Half two weeks ago (no, not the masters division, the whole darn thing), showed that she also has speed by easily winning the race in 18:40. Theresa Sorrentino ran a strong last mile and eclipsed the 23:00 barrier for the first time this year with a 22:54 in second place. Debra Mahr scored another top 3 finish with a solid 23:27 in third place. Angela Conte (26:40) and Ruth Fairbrother (26:45) completed the top five.

Sidney Martinez, who has been improving steadily, ran a 21:33, his best of the year. The same goes for Steve Woitkowski who chimed in with a best-for-2001 of 20:31. A warm welcome back to Tony Celentano, who has made a quick return from shoulder surgery (don’t tell his doctor). Did everyone notice the steep increase in the Triple Crown entry fee? To protest, we have decided that next week’s fun run will have no entry fee. That’s right, totally free. If it catches on, maybe we’ll do it more often. Applications are out for the June 9 Fun Run Championships and the 25th Anniversary Fun Run Hall of Fame Series. All 5 races promise to be a blast.
