Staten Island Athletic Club's
3 Mile Fun Run

April 14, 2001

Steve Muniz took his third consecutive fun run with an uncontested 17:25 while Lisa Mangus continued to round back into shape with a 22:47 win on the women’s side.

Slightly improved conditions, with 47 degree temperatures, a stiff wind, andyes, some actual sunshine, greeted the pack at the start. Given the “slow death walk” that the runners make to the starting line, SIAC is looking into shuttle bus service from the double bridge. The plan is to charge a nominal 50-cent fare so we can raise money to buy all that free water.

Steve Muniz certainly didn’t need public transportation as he motored into the lead from the start and opened up a 60-yard gap by the half-mile mark. Let’s see the 62 bus do that during rush hour. Chris Fekete was the only runner with a shot at Muniz, but by the half-way point he needed to worry more about Mark Vogt, who had quietly moved to within 5 seconds of him. Though Fekete appeared to be struggling, he quickly shifted gears and opened up some breathing room, which he kept increasing to the finish, crossing the line second in 17:57. Vogt took third in 18:23 and Steve Lauria ran his second straight 18:35 fun run for fourth place. Anthony Pitarresi (19:03) outlasted Jeff McDonnell (19:17) for fifth, while Scott LaMorte (19:51), Scott Hall (19:55) and Fred Rigolini (19:59) helped each other break the 20:00 mark in places seven to nine.

Lisa Mangus, who contended for the Millenuim Challenge women’s title and finished third in her age group in last year’s Triple Crown, returned to the fun run winner’s circle with her first win of the year. Lisa’s daughter, seven year old Alexandra ran one loop in 21:50, while her fourteen-year old cousin Bethany Riportella braved the full course in 29:22. Lisa’s son and husband Tommy also ran, but didn’t sign in. You know what they say, the family who runs together, uh, well, I guess nobody really says that. Theresa Sorrentino took second in 23:42 and Lisa Fagnani was third in 25:45.

Speaking of families, father and son combo Richard and Stephen Ruberto both turned in good times with dad Richard clocking his best time if the year with a 27:30.

The fun run will go on next Saturday, and with Scott’s Race on Sunday, it offers a rare chance to double for the weekend without ever leaving the cozy confines of Clove Lakes Park. Though we do recommend you make a brief visit home to shower. The third annual running of Scott’s Race will Start Sunday April 22, at 10:00am on Clove Road and Cheshire Place. Even though last year’s race went off in a snow storm over 1,200 runners registered and over 600 braved the conditions to finish the race and enjoy the post race party in the snow. The inaugural race, held in much better weather, drew 1,600 with over 3,000 attending the post race party. Needless to say this is a great race and a great time. Don’t miss it.
