Staten Island Athletic Club's
3 Mile Fun Run

February 24, 2001

Yet another frigid and windy day was ready and waiting for this week’s fun run. Will there ever be a Saturday morning with good running conditions? Of course there will, and when that happens a lot of runners will be ready to rip through the course. Some runners, however, did a good job of ignoring the conditions this week, as six broke the 19:00 barrier.

Shawn Williams, who finished third overall in the 2000 Triple Crown, toyed with the field before finishing with a 17:30 winning time. While that pace is a bit pedestrian for him, it was good enough to hold off the closing finish of Richie Orazem who took second in a fine 17:50. A gang of runners fought it out for third place. Luis "El Matador" Oyola bulled his way past the pack with a come-from-behind third place effort in 18:26. SIAC president Bob Orazem couldn’t corral El Matador, but came close with a solid 18:30 for fourth place. Ole! John Wowk, shook off the effects of his strong 15K last weekend to finish fifth in 18:43, while young Eugene Borukhav completed the sub 19:00 club with an 18:52 for sixth place.

On the women’s side, Barbara Byrne won her second straight fun run with a 21:00 tour of the course. Debra Mahr made it two straight top-five finishes with a consistent 23:48 and newcomer Lisa Rigolini rounded out the top three in 31:33.

While most of the runners slowed a bit from last week, one notable exception was Steve Corrigan who shaved 1:20 off his time with a 26:10. Some big races are rapidly approaching, with the Forest Avenue Mile, SIAC St. Patty’s Day Run and the Bill Welsh Run all scheduled before the end of March. Check the main page of the web site for details.
