Staten Island Athletic Club's
3 Mile Fun Run

January 20, 2001

Rich Orazem remained undefeated in the new millenium with his fourth consecutive win over the 3-mile fun run course. He had an easy time of it this week, posting his best time of the year (17:37), which easily outdistanced Dave Panza (18:51). Panza ran his own streak of top-five finishes to six and counting. The women's race provided all the excitement that the men's race lacked, as rivals Ruth Fairbrother and Angela Conte tested each other's early season fitness with a down to the wire finish. Fairbrother (26:23) started a mini-streak of her own by squeaking out the victory for her second win in a row. Conte was just a few strides behind, taking second in 26:27.

Sean Gatling showed some early season sparkle, finishing third in 20:15, only 14 seconds off his PR. That PR should fall as soon as better weather conditions arrive, as the runners had to contend with fog, rain and a little sleet this week. Mark Vogt cruised through a 21:01 training run, good for fourth place. Keith Gill (21:37) held off a herd of runners for fifth place, including Dan Pettigrew (21:38), Joe Quinn (21:40) and Fred Rigolini (21:47).

The fun run course was free of snow and ice this week and the runners got in what might be the last snow-free run for a while if we get the Saturday evening snow storm that is predicted. With only 5 minutes to race time, only about 5 runners were milling about, then an additional 25 came out of the woodwork. I always wondered where all these people come from at the last minute. Is everyone doing some last minute carbo-loading at the Lake Café or is there a warm and dry secret hiding place that we don't know about?
