3 Mile Fun Run

This week's fun run provided some excitement as Dave Down needed to come
from behind in the last mile to take the victory in a solid time of 17:55.
Chris Strumolo (18:10), a young talent from New Dorp High School, outsprinted
veteran Dave Panza (18:13) in the last 200 yards for second place. By sharp
contract, Kari Profitt easily won the women's race as she ripped through
the first two miles in splits of 5:57 and 6:10, then cruised in to post an
18:30 winning time.
It wasn't that easy for the men as Strumolo, who's goal was to break 18 minutes,
set a fast pace, passing the first mile in 5:40 with Down 5 seconds behind
and Panza 5 seconds behind Down. By the two mile mark Down had caught Strumolo
as both recorded an 11:43 split. Panza, only 8 seconds back, wasn't ready
to settle for third and managed to catch and momentarily pass Strumolo as
Down pulled away with a 6:12 final mile. As we have all discovered, no amount
of training can replace youth, and Strumolo's younger legs and strong kick
prevailed as he regrouped and pulled away from Panza to reclaim second place
at the finish. Oh to have those fast twitch muscles back again -- where do
they actually go when we turn 35 anyway? Nonetheless, Panza was satisfied
with his time adding that he didn't expect to outgun someone less than half
his age in the final stretch.
The day may have provided one of the last decent race days of the year and
the rains held off until 20 minutes after the race ended. Despite the threatening
skies, the turnout was good and many people turned in very good times for
this late in the season.
