TRAC UPDATE

TRAC is waiting patiently for a response from our Borough President on our formal site recommendation. We do know that he is very concerned with environmental issues and community opposition. We hope to have a major announcement soon on a suitable site that satisfies all concerned. TRAC has invited a representative from Molinari's office to our February Board of Directors meeting for a formal exchange of ideas and update. More info. will be forthcoming as it becomes available.

The annual SIAC St. Patrick's 5Km. will be held on the actual St. Pat's Day(Sat. March 17th.) at Wolfs Pond Park at 10A.M. Race directors Alex Liberatore and Rich Orazem promise entry blanks will be out soon and posted on this site...It took 4 people to replace Tom Hart as Fun Run coordinator but the team of Steve Lauria, Mark Vogt, Fred Rigolini and Dave Panza plan many improvements.(Mile splits etc.)We thank Tommy for 4 years of extremely dedicated service. Nothing was better than Tommy's Hot Chocolate in the winter and Gatorade in the summer. This year is the 25th anniversary of the Fun Run being held on a weekly basis. The 1976 weekly runs were modeled by Joe Jones (SIAC President) after RUNNERS WORLD MAGAZINES national Fun Run program. The distances changed weekly before staying at the 3 Mile distance. One week I remember Mike Sayers winning the run, which was 6 miles. He won a Pineapple. A special celebration is planned for this years FUN RUN CHAMPIONSHIPS....Sat. Feb. 24th will be the date for the Staten Island High School Indoor Track & Field Championships at the Armory in Manhattan. If you
have never been there you must see it. One day as beautiful and popular a facility will be nearby...For High School coaches the ARMORY is a torture test as meets last 10-12 hours in an overcrowded, but fantastic, facility. I know my son Corey  has potential as a coach when I told him he had to accompany me to a meet last Sat. at the armory and he literally started crying. "The meets are too long, there are too many kids and races. I don't want to go" he said. All I could say was Yep...The SIAC masters team has officially finished in third place in the NYRRC year long series of races. All Staten Island should be proud of them. They will be honored at CLUB NITE on Sat. Feb. 24th. at a party in the New York Hilton...A group of Staten Island teachers will head to Puerto Rico to take part in the early Feb. San Blas 1/2 marathon. Sean Doyle, John Wowk, Rich Orazem, and Al Garcia will represent the U.F.T. union. Good Luck...Congratulations to former Staten Islander Ed Gorman who served as race director of the recent Collegiate Invitational at the Armory. Wagner College participated and had some great performances at the meet...Tom Kelly spent a lot of time researching his top 50/100 Van Cortlandt High School Cross Country lists for High School 2 1/2 mile races. The course currently used goes back into the 1950's. If you see any errors or omissions e-mail Tom at tkelly6509@AOL.COM. His goal is to eventually have a 100% accurate listing...Congrats. go out to JoAnne Kopycinski of St. Joseph By The Sea and Tom Cuffe of Msgr. Farrell as their teams qualified to run at the Millrose Games on Friday Feb. 3rd. at Madison Square Garden...Have a great 2001!!!
